About this tool

Tip Calculator splits a bill across N people, applies a tip percentage, and rounds the per-person amount to a configurable currency precision. It also reports the over- or under-payment if you prefer to tip on the payment-method total (the credit-card subtotal, for example) rather than on the per-person split — useful when the rounding of the per-person amount does not equal the rounding of the method total. The tool is plain arithmetic; it does not decide whether tipping is appropriate in your context.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

In the US, the convention is to tip on the pre-tax total (the subtotal before tax is added). Some servers prefer a tip on the post-tax total because it reflects the actual bill. There is no universal answer — the tool reports both, so you can pick.

How do I handle a tip-on-payment-method that doesn't match the per-person split?

If the credit-card tip total rounds to a different value than the per-person tip total (because of how the rounding accumulates), the page shows both. Pick the one that matches how the restaurant will see the charge.
