About this tool

Text Statistics is the larger sibling of Word Counter. In addition to words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs, it reports average word length, average sentence length, type-token ratio (a basic vocabulary diversity measure), the count of unique words, the count of long words (more than six letters), and a Flesch reading-ease score. It is intended for editors and writers who want to spot whether a draft has become too dense, too repetitive, or too long-winded. The page is fully client-side; the analysis happens on your device on each keystroke.

When to use it

  • Auditing a draft for sentence length before submitting — if the average is over 25 words, the prose may be hard to skim
  • Comparing a translated document against the source on type-token ratio to spot over- or under-translation
  • Reporting basic stats on a body of text for a style guide or editorial brief

When not to use it

  • You need full readability diagnostics with grade level — the Flesch score is reported, but it is one of many. Use Hemingway or a real editor for in-depth analysis
  • You need sentiment, named-entity recognition, or topic modelling — this is structural, not semantic
  • You need linguistic correctness checks (grammar, spelling) — pair this with the spelling suggestions tool

Frequently asked questions

Is Flesch reading-ease reliable?

For English prose aimed at general audiences, yes — it has been validated against comprehension studies since the 1940s. For technical writing, marketing copy, or non-English text, it is much less meaningful and the score should be read with that caveat.

How is type-token ratio computed?

As unique words divided by total words, after lowercasing and stripping punctuation. A ratio close to 1.0 means nearly every word is unique; close to 0.0 means heavy repetition. Most adult prose sits between 0.4 and 0.6.
